Ahoy there debaters, instigators, and road sign monkeys.  Merry Christmas, and I mean that as one who’s hanging out alone with Netflix and WordPress today.  Just because I’m not celebrating it doesn’t mean I can’t say “Merry Christmas.”  Whatever, BFNB is not about my legitimate opinions, it’s about a ridiculous distraction and here it is:  THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL!

Have you not seen this?  It’s a little bonus Star Wars movie, made for TV that popped out in between the 1st and 2nd movie and actually fits into the timeline of the original trilogy.  It’s about Chewbacca getting to his family for a Christmas analog called Life Day.  It is widely hated for cheesy plot, poor direction, poor production quality, bad sitcom level acting and the overall vestigial nature of a ‘holiday special’ inexplicably attached to a extra-galactic sci-fi movie series.  All that aside, it’s actually got a halfway decent basic message, and it’s basically the same message I started this post with: ‘even if it’s not my holiday, I still respect it as special, because it’s special to you,’ as Chewy’s friends help him get back for his holiday even though none of them are from his culture.

It even ends with Leah delivering this speech:

“This Holiday is yours but we all share with you the hope that this day brings us closer to freedom, and to harmony and to peace.

No matter how different we appear, we’re all the same in our struggle against the powers of evil and darkness.

I hope that this day will always be a day of joy in which we can reconfirm our dedication and our courage and more than anything else, our love for one another.  This is the promise of the Tree of Life.”

After hearing that speech at the end, it was clear that this isn’t just a shameless promotion, this a non-Christian homage to Christmas and even to Christians, and the whole “Tree of Life” reference at the end makes that very clear.  Anyway, like I stated, Break-From-News-Break is not supposed to be about finding deeper meaning in things, it’s just supposed to be about mindless fun so…
