Off-topic, but RIP Terry Pratchett

My favorite author died today. Sir Terry Pratchett was a humorist/satirist and fantasy author. He was outright robbed by other fictional wizarding school stories, but he said it himself “I think of folklore in much the same way as a carpenter thinks about trees.” The man had a sword forged from meteorites!

Terry was infinitely quotable, so here are a few of my favorites:
“Give a man a fire and he’s warm for the rest of the day, set a man on fire and he’s warm for the rest of his life.”

“Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one.”

“Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.”

So what does this have to do with the Indefensible Middle Ground? Directly nothing, but so much of my adult life has been wrapped up in his fantasy world, the Discworld – which if you just scratched the surface was really a mirror of our own. In his world he could setup parody and satire without fear of libel. It was and will always be brilliant and creative, and showed the best of human nature, even if that “human” was a turtle that forgot it was a deity, or a troll with a cooling helmet on.

One of his most loved characters was Death, actual scythe and robe death – who hated his job, and tried to quit. So I’ll end with a quote from Death (Death never had quotes when he talked, and always in block caps):

DON’T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH

Goodbye Terry.

Tov Purim! Protect yourself!

Tov Purim: http://youtu.be/CGRsf5sybCI

Friends!  It’s Purim, the fun Jewish holiday that reminds us of Ester and Mordecai who protected the Jewish people living in Persia about 2 and a half millenia ago.  It’s a great story, if you are unfamiliar you should look it up.  Ester is beautiful, her unlce is wise, she becomes queen, he becomes an advisor, the prime minister tries to have all Jewish people killed, and the pleas of Ester are the only thing that save them.  That’s the quick quick version, of course, but how did the Shah undo the order to kill all the Jews?
He didn’t.

Ester’s victory wasn’t getting the freedom or salvation of her people granted, it was getting the ‘Right to Bare Arms.’  That’s right, folks, the 2nd ammendment to the US Constitution was also the 1st amendment to the Divine Right Throne of Persia.

Don’t be afraid of guns, members of The Tribe!  Figure out how they work, find one you’re comfortable with, buy it, and get your concealed carry permit.  Don’t be gun-ofobic, know your Ester!  Protect yourself, take it as a mitzvah.

If you are against Net Neutrality, you’re probably in ISIS – Tech breaks down Net Neutrality

Sorry for the click baity headline, but here in the South I keep having people claiming “The government stole the Internet!” “Obama is going to turn the Internet socialist.” Or Fox news claiming that new taxes would arise from Net Neutrality. I break down what it is and why it matters in this audio. Only two groups of people are against N.N. people who work for ISPs/Comcast and people who have been lied to about what it is.
